2 Samuel 23:1–5

¹²And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the Lord said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.

¹³Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

⁸Now therefore so shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel:

⁹And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth.

⁸Now therefore so shalt thou say vnto my seruant Dauid; Thus sayth the LORD of hostes, ^*I tooke thee from the sheepe-cote, ^†from following the sheepe, to be ruler ouer my people, ouer Israel.

⁹And I was with thee withersoeuer thou wentest, and haue cut off all thine enemies ^†out of thy sight, and haue made thee a great name, like vnto the name of the great men that are in the earth.

²⁰I have found David my servant; with my holy oil have I anointed him:

¹⁶Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

⁷⁰He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds:

⁴⁴And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.

⁴⁴And hee said vnto them, These are the words which I spake vnto you, while I was yet with you, y ^t all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the Law of Moses, & in the Prophets, and in the Psalmes concerning me.

⁴¶ And he appointed certain of the Levites to minister before the ark of the Lord, and to record, and to thank and praise the Lord God of Israel:

⁵Asaph the chief, and next to him Zechariah, Jeiel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Mattithiah, and Eliab, and Benaiah, and Obed-edom: and Jeiel with psalteries and with harps; but Asaph made a sound with cymbals;

⁴¶ And he appointed certaine of the Leuites to minister before the Arke of the LORD, and to record, and to thanke and praise the LORD God of Israel,

⁵Asaph the chiefe, and next to him Zachariah, Ieiel, and Shemiramoth, and Iehiel, and Mattithiah, and Eliab, and Benaiah, and Obed Edom: and Ieiel ^†with Psalteries and with harpes: but Asaph made a sound with cymbals.

⁷¶ Then on that day David delivered first this psalm to thank the Lord into the hand of Asaph and his brethren.

⁷¶ Then on that day, Dauid deliuered first this Psalme to thanke the LORD, into the hand of Asaph and his brethren:

⁹Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him, talk ye of all his wondrous works.

⁹Sing vnto him, sing psalmes vnto him, talke you of all his wonderous workes.

¹⁰The adversaries of the Lord shall be broken to pieces; out of heaven shall he thunder upon them: the Lord shall judge the ends of the earth; and he shall give strength unto his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed.

¹⁰The aduersaries of the LORD shalbe broken to pieces: ^*out of heauen shal he thunder vpon them: the LORD shall iudge the ends of the earth, and he shal giue strength vnto his king, and exalt the horne of his Anointed.

¹³Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance;

¹⁴Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me.

¹⁵Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance.

¹³Yea, I thinke it meete, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stirre you vp, by putting you in remembrance:

¹⁴Knowing that shortly I must put off this my Tabernacle, euen as ^*our Lord Iesus Christ hath shewed mee.

¹⁵Moreouer, I will endeuour, that you may bee able after my decease, to haue these things alwayes in remembrance.

⁵That chant to the sound of the viol, and invent to themselves instruments of musick, like David;

⁵That ^‖chaunt to the sound of the Uiole, and inuent to themselues instruments of musicke, like Dauid:

¹⁹Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

²⁰Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

¹⁹Speaking to your selues, in Psalmes, and Hymnes, and Spirituall songs, singing and making melodie in your heart to the Lord,

²⁰Giuing thankes alwayes for all things vnto God, and the Father, in the Name of our Lord Iesus Christ,

⁶Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.

⁶Yet haue I set ^†my King ^†vpon my holy hill of Sion.

²⁰The prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended.

¹AND Jacob called unto his sons, and said, Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you that which shall befall you in the last days.

¹³Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.

¹AND it came to pass a long time after that the Lord had given rest unto Israel from all their enemies round about, that Joshua waxed old and stricken in age.

²And Joshua called for all Israel, and for their elders, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for their officers, and said unto them, I am old and stricken in age:

³And ye have seen all that the Lord your God hath done unto all these nations because of you; for the Lord your God is he that hath fought for you.

⁴Behold, I have divided unto you by lot these nations that remain, to be an inheritance for your tribes, from Jordan, with all the nations that I have cut off, even unto the great sea westward.

⁵And the Lord your God, he shall expel them from before you, and drive them from out of your sight; and ye shall possess their land, as the Lord your God hath promised unto you.

⁶Be ye therefore very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, that ye turn not aside therefrom to the right hand or to the left;

⁷That ye come not among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause to swear by them, neither serve them, nor bow yourselves unto them:

⁸But cleave unto the Lord your God, as ye have done unto this day.

⁹For the Lord hath driven out from before you great nations and strong: but as for you, no man hath been able to stand before you unto this day.

¹⁰One man of you shall chase a thousand: for the Lord your God, he it is that fighteth for you, as he hath promised you.

¹¹Take good heed therefore unto yourselves, that ye love the Lord your God.

¹²Else if ye do in any wise go back, and cleave unto the remnant of these nations, even these that remain among you, and shall make marriages with them, and go in unto them, and they to you:

¹³Know for a certainty that the Lord your God will no more drive out any of these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the Lord your God hath given you.

¹⁴And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the Lord your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof.

¹⁵Therefore it shall come to pass, that as all good things are come upon you, which the Lord your God promised you; so shall the Lord bring upon you all evil things, until he have destroyed you from off this good land which the Lord your God hath given you.

¹⁶When ye have transgressed the covenant of the Lord your God, which he commanded you, and have gone and served other gods, and bowed yourselves to them; then shall the anger of the Lord be kindled against you, and ye shall perish quickly from off the good land which he hath given unto you.

¹¶ And it came to passe, a long time after that the LORD had giuen rest vnto Israel from all their enemies round about, that Ioshua waxed old, and ^†stricken in age.

²And Ioshua called for all Israel, and for their Elders, & for their Heads, and for their Iudges, and for their Officers, and said vnto them; I am old, and stricken in age.

³And yee haue seene all that the ^* LORD your God hath done vnto all these nations, because of you; for the LORD your God is hee that hath fought for you.

⁴Behold, I haue diuided vnto you by lot these nations that remaine, to bee an inheritance for your tribes, from Iordan, with all the nations that I haue cut off, euen vnto the great Sea ^†Westward.

⁵And the LORD your God, hee shall expell them from before you, and driue them from out of your sight, & ye shall possesse their land, as the LORD your God hath promised vnto you.

¹⁵Therefore it shall come to passe, that as all good things are come vpon you, which the LORD your God promised you: so shall the LORD bring vpon you all euill things, vntill he haue destroyed you from off this good land which the LORD your God hath giuen you.

¹⁶When yee haue transgressed the Couenant of the LORD your God, which hee commaunded you, and haue gone and serued other gods, and bowed your selues to them: then shall the anger of the LORD bee kindled against you, and yee shall perish quickly from off the good land which hee hath giuen vnto you.

⁴²And David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,

⁴²And Dauid himselfe saith in the booke of Psalmes, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,

²¹For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

⁴³He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,

²⁵For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved:

²⁶Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope:

²⁷Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

²⁸Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance.

²⁹Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day.

³⁰Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;

³¹He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.

²⁵For Dauid speaketh concerning him, ^*I foresaw the Lord alwayes before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moued.

²⁶Therefore did my heart reioyce, and my tongue was glad: Moreouer also, my flesh shall rest in hope,

²⁷Because thou wilt not leaue my soule in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy one to see corruption.

²⁸Thou hast made knowen to mee the wayes of life, thou shalt make mee full of ioy with thy countenance.

²⁹Men and brethren, ^‖let me freely speake vnto you ^*of the Patriarch Dauid, that he is both dead & buried, and his sepulchre is with vs vnto this day:

³⁰Therefore being a Prophet, ^*and knowing that God had sworne with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loines, according to the flesh, hee would raise vp Christ, to sit on his throne:

³¹He seeing this before, spake of the resurrection of Christ, ^*that his soule was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.

³⁶For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool.

⁷Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,

⁸Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:

⁷Wherfore as the holy Ghost saith, ^*To day if ye will heare his voyce,

⁸Harden not your hearts, as in the prouocation, in the day of temptation in the wildernesse:

⁴He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.

⁴ He is the rocke, his worke is perfect: for all his wayes are Iudgement: A God of trueth, and without iniquity, iust and right is he.

³²For who is God, save the Lord? and who is a rock, save our God?

³²For who is God, saue the LORD? and who is a rocke, saue our God?

²¹Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:

²¹Moreouer thou shalt prouide out of all the people able men, such as feare God, men of trueth, hating couetousnesse, and place such ouer them, to bee rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tennes.

²He shall judge thy people with righteousness, and thy poor with judgment.

²Hee shall iudge thy people with righteousnesse, and thy poore with iudgement.

¹⁸¶ Judges and officers shalt thou make thee in all thy gates, which the Lord thy God giveth thee, throughout thy tribes: and they shall judge the people with just judgment.

¹⁹Thou shalt not wrest judgment; thou shalt not respect persons, neither take a gift: for a gift doth blind the eyes of the wise, and pervert the words of the righteous.

²⁰That which is altogether just shalt thou follow, that thou mayest live, and inherit the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

¹⁸¶ Iudges and officers shalt thou make thee in all thy gates which the LORD thy God giueth thee throughout thy tribes: and they shall iudge the people with iust iudgement.

¹⁹Thou shalt not wrest iudgement, thou shalt not respect persons, ^*neither take a gift: for a gift doth blind the eyes of the wise, and peruert the ^‖wordes of the righteous.

²⁰That which is ^†altogether iust shalt thou followe, that thou mayest liue, and inherite the land which the LORD thy God giueth thee.

⁶Thou shalt not wrest the judgment of thy poor in his cause.

⁷Keep thee far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay thou not: for I will not justify the wicked.

⁸¶ And thou shalt take no gift: for the gift blindeth the wise, and perverteth the words of the righteous.

⁶Thou shalt not wrest the iudgement of thy poore in his cause.

⁷Keepe thee farre from a false matter: and the innocent and righteous slay thou not: for I will not iustifie the wicked.

⁸¶ And ^*thou shalt take no gift: for the gift blindeth ^†the wise, and peruerteth the words of the righteous.

⁸But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.

⁸But vnto the Sonne, he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for euer and euer: a scepter of ^†righteousnesse is the scepter of thy kingdome.

³Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy.

⁴Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked.

⁹¶ Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

⁹¶ ^*‖Reioyce greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout O daughter of Ierusalem: beholde, thy King commeth vnto thee: hee is iust, and hauing saluation, lowly, and riding vpon an asse, and vpon a colt, the foale of an asse.

⁷Wherefore now let the fear of the Lord be upon you; take heed and do it: for there is no iniquity with the Lord our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of gifts.

⁸¶ Moreover in Jerusalem did Jehoshaphat set of the Levites, and of the priests, and of the chief of the fathers of Israel, for the judgment of the Lord, and for controversies, when they returned to Jerusalem.

⁹And he charged them, saying, Thus shall ye do in the fear of the Lord, faithfully, and with a perfect heart.

⁷Wherefore now, let the feare of the LORD be vpon you, take heed and doe it: for there is no ^*iniquitie with the LORD our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of gifts.

⁸¶ Moreouer in Ierusalem did Iehoshaphat set of the Leuites, and of the Priests, and of the chiefe of the fathers of Israel, for the iudgement of the LORD, and for controuersies, when they returned to Ierusalem.

⁹And hee charged them, saying, Thus shall yee doe in the feare of the LORD faithfully, and with a perfect heart.

²And he said, The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer;

³The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence.

²And he said, ^*The LORD is my rocke and my fortresse, and my deliuerer:

³The God of my rocke, in him will I trust: hee is my shield, and the horne of my saluation, my high tower, and my refuge, my Sauiour; thou sauest me from violence.

³⁰How should one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, except their Rock had sold them, and the Lord had shut them up?

³¹For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges.

³⁰How should ^*one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, except their Rocke had sold them, and the LORD had shut them vp?

³¹For their rocke is not as our Rocke, euen our enemies themselues being iudges.

⁵Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine:

⁶And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.

⁵Now ^*therfore if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keepe my couenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure vnto me aboue all people: for ^*all the earth is mine.

⁶And ye shall be vnto me a ^*kingdome of Priestes, and an holy nation. These are the wordes which thou shalt speake vnto the children of Israel.

²⁰And he erected there an altar, and called it El-elohe-Israel.

¹AND there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:

²And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord;

³And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears:

⁴But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.

⁵And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.

¹¶ ^*And there shall come forth a rod out of the stemme of Iesse, and a branch shal grow out of his rootes.

²And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest vpon him, the spirit of wisedome and vnderstanding, the spirit of counsell and might, the spirit of knowledge, and of the feare of the LORD:

^3†And shal make him of quicke vnderstanding in the feare of the LORD, and he shall not iudge after the sight of his eyes, neither reproue after the hearing of his eares.

^4‖*But with righteousnesse shall he iudge the poore, and reprooue with equitie, for the meeke of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rodde of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.

⁵And righteousnesse shalbe the girdle of his loines, and faithfulnesse the girdle of his reines.

¹BEHOLD, a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in judgment.

¹¶ Behold, a King shal reigne in righteousnes, and princes shal rule in iudgement.

⁵¶ Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.

⁵¶ ^*Behold, the daies come, saith the LORD, that I wil raise vnto Dauid a righteous branch, and a King shall reigne and prosper, and shall execute iudgement and iustice in the earth.

⁹I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?

⁹I will say vnto God, My rocke, why hast thou forgotten me? why goe I mourning, because of the oppression of the enemy?

²I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

^2*I am the LORD thy God, which haue brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of ^†bondage:

¹⁴¶ Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even unto the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor.

¹⁴¶ Moreouer, from the time that I was appointed to be their gouernor in the land of Iudah, from the twentieth yeere euen vnto the two and thirtieth yere of Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelue yeres, I and my brethren, haue not eaten the bread of the gouernour:

⁹Open thy mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.

¹⁵And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.

¹⁵And God said moreouer vnto Moses, Thus shalt thou say vnto the children of Israel; The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Iacob hath sent me vnto you: this is my name for euer, and this is my memoriall vnto all generations.

³¹So let all thine enemies perish, O Lord: but let them that love him be as the sun when he goeth forth in his might. And the land had rest forty years.

⁶He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass: as showers that water the earth.

⁶Hee shall come downe like raine vpon the mowen grasse: as showres that water the earth.

⁵Therefore have I hewed them by the prophets; I have slain them by the words of my mouth: and thy judgments are as the light that goeth forth.

^5‖Therefore haue I shewed them by the Prophets: I haue slaine them by the wordes of my mouth, and thy iudgements are as the light that goeth foorth.

³⁶His seed shall endure for ever, and his throne as the sun before me.

^36*His seede shall endure for euer; and his throne as the sunne before me.
