Psalms 132:1–6

¹IN my distress I cried unto the Lord, and he heard me.

¹¶ In my distresse I cried vnto the LORD: and hee heard me.

¹MANY a time have they afflicted me from my youth, may Israel now say:

¹¶ Many a time haue they afflicted me from my youth: may Israel now say.

¹REMEMBER, O Lord, what is come upon us: consider, and behold our reproach.

¹¶ Remember, O LORD, what is come vpon vs: consider and beholde our reproch.

¹AND God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that was with him in the ark: and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters asswaged;

¹¶ And God remembred Noah, and euery liuing thing, and all the cattell that was with him in the Arke: and God made a winde to passe ouer the earth, and the waters asswaged.

¹⁹Remembering mine affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall.

^19‖Remembring mine affliction and my miserie, the wormewood & the gall.

¹I WILL lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.

¹¶ I will lift vp mine eyes vnto the hilles: from whence commeth my helpe.

¹THEY that trust in the Lord shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever.

¹¶ They that trust in the LORD, shalbe as mount Zion, which cannot be remooued, but abideth for euer.

¹WHEN the Lord turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream.

¹¶ When the LORD turned againe the captiuitie of Zion: wee were like them that dreame.

²⁴And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.

¹EXCEPT the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.

¹¶ Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vaine that build it: except the LORD keepe the citie, the watchman waketh but in vaine.

¹BLESSED is every one that feareth the Lord; that walketh in his ways.

¹¶ Blessed is euery one that feareth the LORD: that walketh in his wayes.

¹OUT of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Lord.

¹¶ Out of the depths haue I cryed vnto thee, O LORD.

¹LORD, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me.

¹¶ LORD, my heart is not haughtie, nor mine eyes loftie: neither doe I exercise my selfe in great matters, or in things too high for mee.

¹AND it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.

²And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father’s house.

³Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.

⁴And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.

⁵¶ And David went out whithersoever Saul sent him, and behaved himself wisely: and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul’s servants.

⁶And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of musick.

⁷And the women answered one another as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands.

⁸And Saul was very wroth, and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom?

⁹And Saul eyed David from that day and forward.

¹⁰¶ And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a javelin in Saul’s hand.

¹¹And Saul cast the javelin; for he said, I will smite David even to the wall with it. And David avoided out of his presence twice.

¹²¶ And Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with him, and was departed from Saul.

¹³Therefore Saul removed him from him, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.

¹⁴And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the Lord was with him.

¹⁵Wherefore when Saul saw that he behaved himself very wisely, he was afraid of him.

¹⁶But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he went out and came in before them.

¹⁷¶ And Saul said to David, Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give thee to wife: only be thou valiant for me, and fight the Lord’s battles. For Saul said, Let not mine hand be upon him, but let the hand of the Philistines be upon him.

¹⁸And David said unto Saul, Who am I? and what is my life, or my father’s family in Israel, that I should be son in law to the king?

¹⁹But it came to pass at the time when Merab Saul’s daughter should have been given to David, that she was given unto Adriel the Meholathite to wife.

²⁰And Michal Saul’s daughter loved David: and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him.

²¹And Saul said, I will give him her, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him. Wherefore Saul said to David, Thou shalt this day be my son in law in the one of the twain.

²²¶ And Saul commanded his servants, saying, Commune with David secretly, and say, Behold, the king hath delight in thee, and all his servants love thee: now therefore be the king’s son in law.

²³And Saul’s servants spake those words in the ears of David. And David said, Seemeth it to you a light thing to be a king’s son in law, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?

²⁴And the servants of Saul told him, saying, On this manner spake David.

²⁵And Saul said, Thus shall ye say to David, The king desireth not any dowry, but an hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king’s enemies. But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.

²⁶And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king’s son in law: and the days were not expired.

²⁷Wherefore David arose and went, he and his men, and slew of the Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full tale to the king, that he might be the king’s son in law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife.

²⁸¶ And Saul saw and knew that the Lord was with David, and that Michal Saul’s daughter loved him.

²⁹And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became David’s enemy continually.

³⁰Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it came to pass, after they went forth, that David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.

¹¶ And it came to passe when hee made an ende of speaking vnto Saul, that the soule of Ionathan was knit with the soule of Dauid, and Ionathan loued him as his owne soule.

²And Saul tooke him that day, and would let him go no more home to his fathers house.

³Then Ionathan and Dauid made a couenant, because he loued him as his owne soule.

⁴And Ionathan stript himselfe of the robe that was vpon him, and gaue it to Dauid, and his garments, euen to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.

⁵¶ And Dauid went out, whither soeuer Saul sent him, and ^‖behaued himselfe wisely: and Saul set him ouer the men of warre, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Sauls seruants.

⁶And it came to passe as they came when Dauid was returned from the slaughter of the ^‖Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meete king Saul, with tabrets, with ioy, and with ^†instruments of musicke.

⁷And the women answered one another as they played, and said, ^*Saul hath slaine his thousands, and Dauid his ten thousands.

⁸And Saul was very wroth, and the saying ^†displeased him, and he sayd, They haue ascribed vnto Dauid tenne thousands, and to me they haue ascribed but thousands: and what can he haue more, but the kingdome?

⁹And Saul eyed Dauid from that day, and forward.

¹⁰¶ And it came to passe on the morrow, that the euill spirit from God came vpon Saul, and he prophecied in the midst of the house: and Dauid played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a iauelin in Sauls hand.

¹¹And Saul cast the iauelin; for hee said, I will smite Dauid euen to the wall with it: and Dauid auoided out of his presence twice.

¹²¶ And Saul was afraid of Dauid, because the LORD was with him, and was departed from Saul.

¹³Therefore Saul remooued him from him, and made him his captaine ouer a thousand, and hee went out and came in before the people.

¹⁴And Dauid ^‖behaued himselfe wisely in all his wayes; & the LORD was with him.

¹⁵Wherefore when Saul saw that hee behaued himselfe very wisely, hee was afraid of him.

¹⁶But all Israel and Iudah loued Dauid, because hee went out and came in before them.

¹⁷¶ And Saul said to Dauid, Behold, my elder daughter Merab, her will I giue thee to wife: onely be thou ^†valiant for me, and fight the LORDs battels: for Saul said, Let not mine hand be vpon him, but let the hand of the Philistines be vpon him.

¹⁸And Dauid said vnto Saul, Who am I? and what is my life, or my fathers family in Israel, that I should be sonne in law to the king?

¹⁹But it came to passe at the time when Merab Sauls daughter should haue beene giuen to Dauid, that shee was giuen vnto Adriel the Meholathite to wife.

²⁰And Michal Sauls daughter loued Dauid: and they tolde Saul, and the thing ^†pleased him.

²⁴And the seruants of Saul tolde him, saying; ^†On this manner spake Dauid.

²⁵And Saul said, Thus shall yee say to Dauid, The King desireth not any dowrie, but an hundred foreskinnes of the Philistines, to be auenged of the kings enemies. But Saul thought to make Dauid fal by the hand of the Philistines.

²⁶And when his seruants told Dauid these wordes, it pleased Dauid well to be the kings sonne in lawe: and the dayes were not ^†expired.

²⁷Wherefore Dauid arose, hee and his men, and slew of the Philistines two hundred men, and Dauid brought their foreskinnes, and they gaue them in full tale to the king, that hee might be the kings sonne in law: and Saul gaue him Michal his daughter to wife.

²⁸¶ And Saul saw and knew that the LORD was with Dauid, and that Michal Sauls daughter loued him.

²⁹And Saul was yet the more afraid of Dauid; and Saul became Dauids enemie continually.

³⁰Then the Princes of the Philistines went foorth: and it came to passe after they went foorth, that Dauid behaued himselfe more wisely then all the seruants of Saul, so that his name was ^†much set by.

¹AND it came to pass after this, that Absalom prepared him chariots and horses, and fifty men to run before him.

²And Absalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate: and it was so, that when any man that had a controversy came to the king for judgment, then Absalom called unto him, and said, Of what city art thou? And he said, Thy servant is of one of the tribes of Israel.

³And Absalom said unto him, See, thy matters are good and right; but there is no man deputed of the king to hear thee.

⁴Absalom said moreover, Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man which hath any suit or cause might come unto me, and I would do him justice!

⁵And it was so, that when any man came nigh to him to do him obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took him, and kissed him.

⁶And on this manner did Absalom to all Israel that came to the king for judgment: so Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.

⁷¶ And it came to pass after forty years, that Absalom said unto the king, I pray thee, let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed unto the Lord, in Hebron.

⁸For thy servant vowed a vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, If the Lord shall bring me again indeed to Jerusalem, then I will serve the Lord.

⁹And the king said unto him, Go in peace. So he arose, and went to Hebron.

¹⁰¶ But Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, As soon as ye hear the sound of the trumpet, then ye shall say, Absalom reigneth in Hebron.

¹¹And with Absalom went two hundred men out of Jerusalem, that were called; and they went in their simplicity, and they knew not any thing.

¹²And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counseller, from his city, even from Giloh, while he offered sacrifices. And the conspiracy was strong; for the people increased continually with Absalom.

¹³¶ And there came a messenger to David, saying, The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom.

¹⁴And David said unto all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, Arise, and let us flee; for we shall not else escape from Absalom: make speed to depart, lest he overtake us suddenly, and bring evil upon us, and smite the city with the edge of the sword.

¹⁵And the king’s servants said unto the king, Behold, thy servants are ready to do whatsoever my lord the king shall appoint.

¹⁶And the king went forth, and all his household after him. And the king left ten women, which were concubines, to keep the house.

¹⁷And the king went forth, and all the people after him, and tarried in a place that was far off.

¹⁸And all his servants passed on beside him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, six hundred men which came after him from Gath, passed on before the king.

¹⁹¶ Then said the king to Ittai the Gittite, Wherefore goest thou also with us? return to thy place, and abide with the king: for thou art a stranger, and also an exile.

²⁰Whereas thou camest but yesterday, should I this day make thee go up and down with us? seeing I go whither I may, return thou, and take back thy brethren: mercy and truth be with thee.

¹¶ And it came to passe after this, that Absalom prepared him charets and horses, and fiftie men to runne before him.

²And Absalom rose vp earely, and stood beside the way of the gate: and it was so, that when any man that had a controuersie, ^†came to the king for iudgment, then Absalom called vnto him, and said, Of what citie art thou? And he said, Thy seruant is of one of the tribes of Israel.

³And Absalom said vnto him, See, thy matters are good & right, but there is ^‖no man deputed of the king to heare thee.

⁴Absalom said moreouer, Oh that I were made Iudge in the land, that euery man which hath any suit or cause, might come vnto me, and I would do him iustice.

⁵And it was so, that when any man came nigh to him, to doe him obeisance, he put foorth his hand, and tooke him, and kissed him.

⁶And on this maner did Absalom to all Israel, that came to the King for iudgement: so Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.

⁷¶ And it came to passe after fourtie yeeres, that Absalom said vnto the king, I pray thee, let mee goe and pay my vow which I haue vowed vnto the LORD in Hebron.

⁸For thy seruant vowed a vowe while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, If the LORD shall bring mee againe in deed to Ierusalem, then I will serue the LORD.

¹⁶And the king went foorth, and all his houshold ^†after him: and the King left tenne women, which were concubines, to keepe the house.

¹⁷And the king went forth, and all the people after him, and taried in a place that was farre off.

¹⁸And all his seruants passed on beside him: and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, sixe hundred men, which came after him from Gath, passed on before the king.

¹⁹¶ Then said the king to Ittai the Gittite, Wherefore goest thou also with vs? Returne to thy place, and abide with the King: for thou art a stranger, and also an exile.

¹I WAS glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord.

¹¶ I was glad when they sayd vnto me: Let vs goe into the house of the LORD.

¹UNTO thee lift I up mine eyes, O thou that dwellest in the heavens.

¹¶ Vnto thee lift I vp mine eyes: O thou that dwellest in the heauens.

¹IF it had not been the Lord who was on our side, now may Israel say;

¹¶ If it had not bene the LORD who was on our side: nowe may Israel say:

⁶Remember, O Lord, thy tender mercies and thy lovingkindnesses; for they have been ever of old.

⁷Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions: according to thy mercy remember thou me for thy goodness’ sake, O Lord.

²⁴But his bow abode in strength, and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob; (from thence is the shepherd, the stone of Israel:)

¹PRAISE waiteth for thee, O God, in Sion: and unto thee shall the vow be performed.

¹¶ Praise waiteth for thee, O God, in Sion: and vnto thee shall the vowe be performed.

¹AND it came to pass, when the king sat in his house, and the Lord had given him rest round about from all his enemies;

¹¶ And it came to passe, ^*when the King sate in his house, and the LORD had giuen him rest round about frō all his enemies;

²⁶And I will feed them that oppress thee with their own flesh; and they shall be drunken with their own blood, as with sweet wine: and all flesh shall know that I the Lord am thy Saviour and thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob.

^26*‖And I will feede them that oppresse thee, with their owne flesh, and they shall be drunken with their owne blood, as with sweet wine: and all flesh shall know that I the LORD am thy Sauiour and thy Redeemer, the mightie One of Iacob.

¹⁶Thou shalt also suck the milk of the Gentiles, and shalt suck the breast of kings: and thou shalt know that I the Lord am thy Saviour and thy Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob.

¹⁶Thou shalt also sucke the milke of the Gentiles, and shalt sucke the brest of kings, and thou shalt know that I the LORD am thy Sauiour and thy Redeemer, the mightie One of Iacob.

¹⁴I will pay my vows unto the Lord now in the presence of all his people.

¹⁵Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.

¹⁶O Lord, truly I am thy servant; I am thy servant, and the son of thine handmaid: thou hast loosed my bonds.

¹⁷I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the Lord.

¹⁸I will pay my vows unto the Lord now in the presence of all his people,

¹⁴I will pay my vowes vnto the LORD: now in the presence of all his people.

¹⁵Precious in y ^e sight of the LORD: is the death of his Saints.

¹⁶Oh LORD, truely I am thy seruant, I am thy seruant, and the sonne of thy handmayde: thou hast loosed my bonds.

¹⁷I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thankes-giuing: and will call vpon the Name of the LORD.

¹⁸I will pay my vowes vnto the LORD: now in the presence of all his people:

¹⁰⁶I have sworn, and I will perform it, that I will keep thy righteous judgments.

¹⁰⁶I haue sworne, and I will performe it: that I will keepe thy righteous iudgements.

⁵Until I find out a place for the Lord, an habitation for the mighty God of Jacob.

^5†Untill I finde out a place for the LORD: an habitation for the mightie God of Iacob.

⁵Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God:

⁶Which made heaven, and earth, the sea, and all that therein is: which keepeth truth for ever:

⁵Happy is he that hath the God of Iacob for his helpe: whose hope is in the LORD his God:

⁶Which made heauen and earth, the Sea, and all that therein is: which keepeth trueth for euer:

¹¹The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.

¹THE mighty God, even the Lord, hath spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof.

¹¶ The mightie God, euen the LORD hath spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sunne, vnto the going downe thereof.

¹²Thy vows are upon me, O God: I will render praises unto thee.

¹²Thy vowes are vpon me, O God: I will render praises vnto thee.

¹³I will go into thy house with burnt offerings: I will pay thee my vows,

¹⁴Which my lips have uttered, and my mouth hath spoken, when I was in trouble.

¹³I will goe into thy house, with burnt offerings: I will pay thee my vowes,

^14†Which my lips haue vttered, and my mouth hath spoken, when I was in trouble.

¹⁰Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.

¹⁰Whatsoeuer thy hand findeth to doe, doe it with thy might: for there is no worke, nor deuice, nor knowledge, nor wisedome in the graue, whither thou goest.

⁴Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your cieled houses, and this house lie waste?

⁴ Is it time for you, O yee, to dwell in your sieled houses, and this house lie waste?

³³But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

⁴Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids.

¹⁸Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, until he have finished the thing this day.

³³And there was set meat before him to eat: but he said, I will not eat, until I have told mine errand. And he said, Speak on.

²²In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

⁷And David said to Solomon, My son, as for me, it was in my mind to build an house unto the name of the Lord my God:

⁷And Dauid saide to Solomon; My sonne, as for me, it was in my mind to build an house vnto the Name of the LORD my God.

⁶But who is able to build him an house, seeing the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain him? who am I then, that I should build him an house, save only to burn sacrifice before him?

^6*But who ^†is able to build him an house, seeing the heauen, and heauen of heauens cannot conteine him? who am I then that I should build him an house? saue onely to burne sacrifice before him?

⁴⁶Who found favour before God, and desired to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob.

⁴⁷But Solomon built him an house.

⁴⁸Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet,

⁴⁹Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest?

⁴⁶Who found fauour before God, and desired to find a Tabernacle for the God of Iacob.

^47*But Solomon built him an house.

^48*Howbeit the most high dwelleth not in temples made with hands, as saith the Prophet,

⁴⁹Heauen is my throne, and earth is my footestoole: What house will ye build me, saith the Lord? Or what is the place of my rest?

¹²And said unto them, Ye are the chief of the fathers of the Levites: sanctify yourselves, both ye and your brethren, that ye may bring up the ark of the Lord God of Israel unto the place that I have prepared for it.

¹²And said vnto them, Yee are the chiefe of the fathers of the Leuites: sanctifie your selues both yee and your brethren, that you may bring vp the Arke of the LORD God of Israel, vnto the place that I haue prepared for it.

³And David gathered all Israel together to Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the Lord unto his place, which he had prepared for it.

³And Dauid gathered all Israel together to Ierusalem, to bring vp the Arke of the LORD vnto his place, which hee had prepared for it.

²⁷But will God indeed dwell on the earth? behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded?

²⁷But will God indeede dwell on the earth? Behold, the heauen, and heauen of heauens cannot conteine thee: how much lesse this House that I haue builded?

¹⁷¶ And they brought in the ark of the Lord, and set it in his place, in the midst of the tabernacle that David had pitched for it: and David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord.

⁵So David gathered all Israel together, from Shihor of Egypt even unto the entering of Hemath, to bring the ark of God from Kirjath-jearim.

⁶And David went up, and all Israel, to Baalah, that is, to Kirjath-jearim, which belonged to Judah, to bring up thence the ark of God the Lord, that dwelleth between the cherubims, whose name is called on it.

⁵So ^*Dauid gathered all Israel together, from Shihor of Egypt, euen vnto the entring of Hemath, to bring the Arke of God from Kiriath-iearim.

⁶And Dauid went vp, and all Israel, to ^*Baalah, that is, to Kiriath-iearim, which belonged to Iudah, to bring vp thence the Arke of God the LORD, that dwelleth betweene the Cherubims, whose name is called on it.

¹⁹And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Beth-lehem.
