James 4:9–10

⁴Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

¹⁰For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

¹¹For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.

²⁵Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep.

¹³Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; and the end of that mirth is heaviness.

¹GO to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.

²Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.

²¶ It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.

³Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.

⁵It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.

¹⁸¶ I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus; Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke: turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou art the Lord my God.

¹⁹Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh: I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.

²⁰Is Ephraim my dear son? is he a pleasant child? for since I spake against him, I do earnestly remember him still: therefore my bowels are troubled for him; I will surely have mercy upon him, saith the Lord.

⁷How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.

⁸Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.

⁷How much she hath glorified her selfe, and liued deliciously, so much torment and sorrow giue her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a ^*Queene, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.

⁸Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine, and she shall bee vtterly burnt with fire, for strong is the Lord God, who iudgeth her.

¹⁶¶ But they that escape of them shall escape, and shall be on the mountains like doves of the valleys, all of them mourning, every one for his iniquity.

¹²And in that day did the Lord God of hosts call to weeping, and to mourning, and to baldness, and to girding with sackcloth:

¹³And behold joy and gladness, slaying oxen, and killing sheep, eating flesh, and drinking wine: let us eat and drink; for to morrow we shall die.

⁵They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.

¹⁰And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.

¹¹In that day shall there be a great mourning in Jerusalem, as the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddon.

¹²And the land shall mourn, every family apart; the family of the house of David apart, and their wives apart; the family of the house of Nathan apart, and their wives apart;

¹³The family of the house of Levi apart, and their wives apart; the family of Shimei apart, and their wives apart;

¹⁴All the families that remain, every family apart, and their wives apart.

^10*And I wil powre vpon the house of Dauid, and vpon the inhabitants of Ierusalem the spirit of grace and of supplications, and they shall looke vpon me whom they haue pearced, and they shal mourne for him, as one mourneth for his onely sonne, and shall be in bitternesse for him, as one that is in bitternesse for his first borne.

^11**In that day shall there bee a great mourning in Ierusalem, as the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddon.

^12†And the land shal mourne, euery familie apart, the familie of the house of Dauid apart, and their wiues apart, the familie of the house of Nathan apart, and their wiues apart:

¹³The familie of the house of Leui apart, and their wiues apart: the familie of Shimei apart, and their wiues apart:

¹⁴All the families that remaine, euery family apart, & their wiues apart.

²I said of laughter, It is mad: and of mirth, What doeth it?

¹³Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, both young men and old together: for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow.

⁹They shall come with weeping, and with supplications will I lead them: I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters in a straight way, wherein they shall not stumble: for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.

²¹Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.

⁷¹It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes.

⁶The Lord lifteth up the meek: he casteth the wicked down to the ground.

¹²And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

^12*And whosoeuer shall exalt himselfe, shall be abased: and he that shall humble himselfe, shall be exalted.

⁶Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:

⁶Humble yourselues therefore vnder the mighty hand of God, that hee may exalt you in due time,

¹¹For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

^11*For whosoeuer exalteth himselfe, shalbe abased: and hee that humbleth himselfe, shalbe exalted.

⁶But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

⁷Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

⁶But he giueth more grace, wherefore he saith, ^*God resisteth the proude, but giueth grace vnto the humble.

⁷Submit your selues therefore to God: resist the deuill, and hee will flee from you.

²⁹When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person.

²⁹When men are cast downe, then thou shalt say, There is lifting vp: and he shall saue the ^†humble person.

⁷He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth the needy out of the dunghill;

⁵²He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.

⁹He will keep the feet of his saints, and the wicked shall be silent in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail.

⁹He will keepe the feet of his saints, and the wicked shall bee silent in darkenesse; for by strength shall no man preuaile.

¹⁴I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

¹⁴I tell you, this man went downe to his house iustified rather then the other: ^*For euery one that exalteth himselfe, shall be abased: and hee that humbleth himselfe, shall be exalted.

¹I WILL extol thee, O Lord; for thou hast lifted me up, and hast not made my foes to rejoice over me.

¹¶ I wil extol thee, O LORD, for thou hast lifted me vp; and hast not made my foes to reioyce ouer me.

⁶And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the Lord.

^6†And now shall mine head be lifted vp aboue mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of ioy, I will sing, yea, I will sing praises vnto the LORD.

⁹Save thy people, and bless thine inheritance: feed them also, and lift them up for ever.

^9‖Saue thy people, and blesse thine inheritance, feede them also, and lift them vp for euer.
