John 5:33–40

¹⁵¶ John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.

¹⁶And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.

¹⁷For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

¹⁸No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

¹⁹¶ And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?

²⁰And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.

²¹And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.

²²Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?

²³He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.

²⁴And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.

²⁵And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?

²⁶John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;

²⁷He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe’s latchet I am not worthy to unloose.

¹⁵¶ Iohn bare witnesse of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that commeth after me, is preferred before me, for he was before me.

¹⁶And of his ^*fulnesse haue all wee receiued, and grace for grace.

¹⁷For the Law was giuen by Moses, but grace and trueth came by Iesus Christ.

^18*No man hath seene God at any time: the onely begotten Sonne, which is in the bosome of the Father, he hath declared him.

¹⁹¶ And this is the record of Iohn, when the Iewes sent Priests and Leuites from Hierusalem, to aske him, Who art thou?

²⁰And he confessed, and denied not: but confessed, I am not the Christ.

²¹And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou ^‖that Prophet? And hee answered, No.

^27*He it is, who comming after me, is preferred before me, whose shoes latchet I am not worthy to vnloose.

²⁹¶ The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

³⁰This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.

³¹And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.

³²And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.

³³And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.

³⁴And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.

²⁹¶ The next day, Iohn seeth Iesus comming vnto him, and saith, Behold the Lambe of God, which ^‖taketh away the sinne of the world.

³⁰This is he of whom I said, After me commeth a man, which is preferred before me: for he was before me.

³¹And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therfore am I come baptizing with water.

^32*And Iohn bare record saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heauen, like a Doue, and it abode vpon him.

³³And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said vnto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, & remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the holy Ghost.

³⁴And I saw, and bare record, that this is the sonne of God.

⁶¶ There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

⁷The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

⁸He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

⁶¶ ^*There was a man sent from God, whose name was Iohn.

⁷The same came for a witnesse, to beare witnesse of the light, that all men through him might beleeue.

⁸Hee was not that light, but was sent to beare witnesse of that light.

²⁶And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.

²⁷John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.

²⁸Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.

²⁹He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.

³⁰He must increase, but I must decrease.

³¹He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all.

³²And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony.

³³He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true.

³⁴For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.

³⁵The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.

³⁶He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

²⁶And they came vnto Iohn, and said vnto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Iordane, ^*to whom thou barest witnesse, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.

²⁷Iohn answered, and said, ^*A man can ^‖receiue nothing, except it be giuen him from heauen.

²⁸Ye your selues beare me witnesse, that I said, ^*I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.

²⁹He that hath the bride, is the bridegrome: but the friend of the bridegrome, which standeth and heareth him, reioyceth greatly because of the bridegromes voice: This my ioy therefore is fulfilled.

³⁰Hee must increase, but I must decrease.

³¹Hee that commeth from aboue, is aboue all: hee that is of the earth, is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: hee that cōmeth from heauen is aboue all:

³²And what hee hath seene and heard, that he testifieth, and no man receiueth his testimony:

³³He that hath receiued his testimonie, ^*hath set to his seale, that God is true.

³⁴For he whom God hath sent, speaketh the words of God: For God giueth not the Spirit by measure vnto him.

^35*The Father loueth the Sonne, and hath giuen al things into his hand.

^36*He that beleeueth on the Sonne, hath euerlasting life: and he that beleeueth not the Sonne, shall not see life: but the wrath of God abideth on him.

⁹If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son.

⁹If we receiue the witnesse of men, the witnesse of God is greater: for this is the witnesse of God, which hee hath testified of his Sonne.

¹⁶Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.

¹⁶Take heed vnto thy selfe, and vnto the doctrine: continue in them: for in doing this, thou shalt both saue thy selfe, and them that heare thee.

³¹But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

³¹But these are written, that yee might beleeue that Iesus is the Christ the Sonne of God, and that beleeuing ye might haue life through his Name.

⁴¹¶ And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it,

⁴²Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.

⁴¹¶ And when he was come neere, he beheld the city and wept ouer it,

⁴²Saying, If thou hadst knowen, euen thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong vnto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.

²²To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.

³For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;

⁴Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

⁴Who will haue all men to bee saued, and to come vnto the knowledge of the trueth.

⁴¹I receive not honour from men.

¹BRETHREN, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.

¹¶ Brethren, my hearts desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saued.

⁵⁴Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:

⁵⁴Iesus answered, If I honour myselfe, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me, of whom ye say, that he is your God:

⁴⁷And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

⁴⁷And that repentance and remission of sinnes should be preached in his Name, among all nations, beginning at Hierusalem.

³⁴O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not!

^34*O Hierusalem, Hierusalem, which killest the Prophets, and stonest them that are sent vnto thee; how often would I haue gathered thy children together, as a henne doeth gather her brood vnder her wings, & ye would not?

¹⁰For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

^10*For the sonne of man is come to seeke, and to saue that which was lost.

²¹But to Israel he saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.

²¹But to Israel he sayth, ^*All day long I haue stretched foorth my hands vnto a disobedient and gainesaying people.

²¹Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

²¹Be not ouercome of euill, but ouercome euill with good.

³For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect?

³For what if some did not beleeue? shall their vnbeliefe make the faith of God without effect?

¹⁹We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

¹⁹We haue also a more sure word of prophecie, whereunto yee doe well that ye take heede, as vnto a light that shineth in a darke place, vntill the day dawne, and the day starre arise in your hearts:

⁷The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

⁸He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

⁷The same came for a witnesse, to beare witnesse of the light, that all men through him might beleeue.

¹¹Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

¹¹Uerely I say vnto you, Among them that are borne of women, there hath not risen a greater then Iohn the Baptist: notwithstanding, hee that is least in the kingdome of heauen, is greater then he.

⁷⁶And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;

⁷⁷To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,

⁷⁶And thou childe shalt bee called the Prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt goe before the face of the Lord to prepare his wayes.

⁷⁷To giue knowledge of saluation vnto his people, ^‖by the remission of their sinnes,

⁵Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judæa, and all the region round about Jordan,

⁶And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

⁷¶ But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

⁵Then went out to him Hierusalem, and all Iudea, and all the region round about Iordane,

⁶And were baptized of him in Iordane, confessing their sinnes.

⁷¶ But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his Baptisme, he said vnto them, ^*O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

⁶⁶¶ From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

¹⁵For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.

¹⁶And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.

¹⁷And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

¹⁵For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shal drinke neither wine, nor strong drinke, and he shall bee filled with the holy Ghost, euen from his mothers wombe.

^16*And many of the children of Israel shall hee turne to the Lord their God.

¹⁷And hee shall goe before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turne the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient ^‖to the wisedome of the iust, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

²⁸For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.

²⁰For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and an holy, and observed him; and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.

⁷¶ And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?

⁸But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses.

⁹But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.

²¹Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.

²⁶But if we shall say, Of men; we fear the people; for all hold John as a prophet.

³¹And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness.

^31†‖†And they come vnto thee as the people commeth, and they sit before thee as my people, and they heare thy words, but they will not doe them: for with their mouth they shew much loue, but their heart goeth after their couetousnesse.

¹⁵Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? for I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me.

¹⁶Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?

²⁵Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father’s name, they bear witness of me.

²⁵Iesus answered them, I told you, and ye beleeued not: the workes that I doe in my Fathers name, they beare witnesse of me.

³⁷If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not.

³⁸But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.

³⁷If I doe not the workes of my Father, beleeue me not.

³⁸But if I doe, though yee beleeue not me, beleeue the works: that ye may know and beleeue that the Father is in me, and I in him.

²⁴If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father.

²³¶ Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did.

³⁰The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes.

³¹Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.

³²Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind.

³³If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.

³⁰The man answered, and said vnto them, Why herein is a marueilous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes.

²The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.

¹¹And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.

¹¹And this is the record, that God hath giuen to vs eternall life, and this life is in his Sonne.

¹²Hee that hath the Sonne, hath life; and hee that hath not the Sonne, hath not life.

²²Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:

¹⁰Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works.

¹¹Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake.

¹⁰Beleeuest thou not that I am in the father, and the father in mee? The words that I speake vnto you, I speak not of my selfe: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doth the works.

¹¹Beleeue me that I am in the Father, and the Father in mee: or else beleeue me for the very workes sake.

¹⁷For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

^17*For God sent not his Sonne into the world to condemne the world: but that the world through him might be saued.

⁴Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see:

³⁴Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

³⁴Iesus saith vnto them, My meat is, to doe the will of him that sent mee, and to finish his worke.

³²¶ There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.

³²¶ ^*There is another that beareth witnesse of me, & I know that the witnesse which he witnesseth of me, is true.

³⁷And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died?

³⁷And some of them said, Could not this man, ^*which opened the eyes of the blinde, haue caused that euen this man should not haue died?

⁴I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.

⁴I haue glorified thee on the earth: I haue finished the worke which thou gauest me to doe.

¹⁸I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.

¹⁸I am one that beare witnesse of my selfe, and the Father that sent mee, beareth witnesse of me.

¹⁷And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

¹⁷And loe, a voice from heauen, saying, This is my beloued Sonne, in whom I am well pleased.

¹⁷Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

¹²No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

²⁰If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?

²⁰If a man say, I loue God, and hateth his brother, he is a lyar. For hee that loueth not his brother whom hee hath seene, how can he loue God whom he hath not seene?

¹⁶Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.

¹THAT which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;

²(For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)

¹¶ That which was from y ^e beginning, which wee haue heard, which wee haue seene with our eyes, which wee haue looked vpon, and our hands haue handled of the word of life.

²(For the life was manifested, and we haue seene it, and beare witnes, and shew vnto you that eternall life which was with the Father, and was manifested vnto vs.)

¹²And the Lord spake unto you out of the midst of the fire: ye heard the voice of the words, but saw no similitude; only ye heard a voice.

¹⁹And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die.

¹⁹And they saide vnto Moses, ^*Speake thou with vs, and wee will heare: But let not God speake with vs, lest we die.

⁹Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?

⁹Iesus saith vnto him, Haue I bin so long time with you, and yet hast thou not knowen me, Philip? he that hath seene me, hath seene the father, and how sayest thou then, Shew vs the father?

²⁷Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.

^27‖Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth vnto euerlasting life, which the Sonne of man shall giue vnto you: ^*for him hath God the Father sealed.

⁵While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

²⁴If I had not done among them the works which none other man did, they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my Father.

¹⁴I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.

¹⁴I haue written vnto you, fathers, because ye haue knowen him that is from the beginning. I haue written vnto you, young men, because yee are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and yee haue ouercome the wicked one.

⁶And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:

¹⁹And this is the condemnation, ^*that light is come into the world, and men loued darknesse rather then light, because their deedes were euill.

¹WHO hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?
